Description


The University of Bath's next annual HPC Symposium will take place on Thursday 6th June 2019.

This annual event aims to showcase the broad range of HPC-enabled research being carried out at Bath, and to provide an informal opportunity for current and prospective users of the University's Balena HPC facility to network and establish new collaborations.

The one-day event will see keynote lectures from technology and applications experts (see below) alongside contributed talks, posters and "flash" presentations by current Balena HPC users. As is tradition, prizes will be awarded for the best contributions.

Registration, as always, is completely free, and we welcome contributions from all areas of development- and application-oriented HPC research.

Refreshments and a buffet lunch will be provided during the day, and there will be an early-evening networking event with pizza and refreshments.

Invited speakers

Dr Mike Croucher, author of Walking Randomly and Technical Evangelist at NAG. Mike will be giving an insightful keynote on his experiences in working with research communities and enabling them to do computation better.

Dr Hendrik Van Eerten, Computational Astrophysics at University of Bath. Hendrik will describe how HPC is being used by researchers to study exploding stars, growing galaxies and feeding black holes in an expanding Universe.

Dr James Price, Research Software Engineer (RSE) from University of Bristol. James has been one of the RSEs involved with the GW4 Isambard HPC project of which Bath is a partner. He will give an overview on the 10,000 ARM core system which is available to Bath researchers and will share the recent performance benchmarks.

Mike Kiernan, EMEA Lead for Microsoft Big Compute and HPC. Mike will provide an overview of the research computing tools available in the Azure Cloud with an emphasis on HPC.

Present a talk or flash-poster at the Symposium

We would like to invite submissions for talks and the flash poster presentations on all aspects of HPC-orientated research, including (but not limited to):

  • HPC driven research in all disciplines
  • Code parallelisation and algorithm development
  • Experiences with tools/libraries and the scalability of computational codes
  • Experiences with accelerator hardware (e.g. GPUs, FPGAs)

Abstracts can be submitted via the Microsoft Form here. - Please note, you may be asked to sign in with your University credentials (e.g. abc123@bath.ac.uk).

This is an exciting opportunity for students and researchers across the University to network and share their experiences of using High Performance Computing for their research. We particularly welcome submissions from graduate students, the HPC symposium is a great opportunity to present in an informal and friendly setting.

On the day prizes will be awarded for the best contributions who demonstrate how the use of HPC has made an impact on their research.

There will be two kinds of contributions for the symposium:

  • Contributed talk: 15 min (12 + 3 mins questions) presentation
  • A poster plus accompanying "flash" presentation (maximum 1 slide and 3 min talk)

Posters will be displayed just outside of 3 West North 2.1. The poster boards will accommodate up to A0 posters, and there are no specific requirements on size/orientation.
